I'm Will, or openwallaby. I'm a year 12 student from Australia, and I made this website as a way of sharing some of the things I'm interested in. I have a blog where I'll post my opinions as well as guides for things I can help with. I hope to make some friends here on the small web, as well as help others with similar interests to me. I'm always open to receiving feedback, suggestions, corrections, questions, or a friendly "G'day!" via email or Matrix, which you can find here!
My Interests
I have quite a few interests, some of which rotate in and out of my mind, but some like to stick around. I love computers and Linux, and I write about them on the blog. I daily drive arch, btw.
I also love photography, and you can check out my photography posts on this website, where I show off some of my pictures along with my thoughts. I love the style of warm, hazy, dream-like film photography, but I'm not willing to spend that much money or effort on film, so I just edit my images to somewhat achieve the effect. I currently use a Sony ZV-E10 with just the kit lens.
I enjoy learning about topics in physics and math, and spend a lot of time watching educational youtube channels like Veritasium and 3Blue1Brown. More inspirations and favourites of mine here.
I also enjoy music, movies, books, and games, but you can read about those on the media page.
Some other rotating topics I like include things like space, programming, linguistics, electronics/robotics, chess, etc.
Miscellaneous things I'm a fan of: alternate number systems, banh mi, nuclear energy, and Wes Anderson films.
The Website
I made this website because I wanted to share my ideas as well as join the small web/indie web/fediverse/geminispace/etc community. I wasn't born early enough to experience the web as of the 1990's and 2000's, but the more recent growing trend of people building their own little spaces on the web, just for themselves, seemed like a great opportunity for me to do the same, and here we are!
This website is hosted on a Raspberry Pi 5 sitting on my desk, and the domain is registered with Porkbun at the moment, who I can wholeheartedly recommend except for not supporting the .au tld (which is fair enough for an American company). I use Docker (compose) to manage the services I need for the small web, like this website (running behind Caddy), as well as a self-hosted GoToSocial server for the Fediverse, and a Tuwunel server for Matrix. I also plan to run a Gemini server to have an alternate version of this site sitting there!
I absolutely despise paid ads and tracking, so this website contains neither of those. I'm also not super happy with the look of the website in its current state, but I can always update and add things to make it better over time. You have to start somewhere after all.
